Lindstrand M Towards a technology-neutral standard - Novel DOVID reader paves the way to DOVID standard

Despite their critical contribution to document security, Diffractive Optically Variable Image Devices (DOVIDs) lack one important feature: it is impossible to characterize them in a meaningful manner. As DOVIDs are primarily used to facilitate first line (human) inspection, a meaningful characterization must resemble the information gained by visual perception. Unfortunately instruments are unable to capture the perceptually important characteristics of DOVIDs. The recent development of a new DOVID scanner by gonioLabs of Sweden effectively reduces this shortcoming. Moreover, the ability to characterise DOVIDs in detail opens the door to a technology-neutral standard, facilitates unambiguous forensic communication, and greatly enhances detailed visual inspection. In short: improved security.
